Construction management is a management and leadership discipline, focused on planning, organizing, coordinating, and controlling the construction process, both horizontal and vertical. It utilizes scheduling, cost estimating, budget control, project staffing, subcontracting, construction methods to marshal equipment, labor, materials, trades, suppliers, and the physical site to turn the vision of the architect and engineers into reality. A civil engineering degree prepares students to take the civil engineering license exam and become a registered professional engineer. Civil engineering focuses on horizontal infrastructure and site improvement design, including dry utilities, potable water service, sewage management & treatment, flood control, roads, curbs, sidewalks, and other site requirements to turn raw land into buildable lots and pads.

NewSchool’s Bachelor of Science in Construction Management comprises the same amount of credit hours asÌýa four-year program, but ¾±³Ù’sÌýdelivered in three years due to our quarter system.ÌýStudents take courses in the fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. You can take longer to complete your degree if you enroll as a part-time student. Note that part-time status could affect your financial aid.Ìý

No, our Bachelor of Science in Construction Management is held in person on our campus in downtown San Diego. This format helps students build a community and support system while studying at NewSchool. If you continue your studies after graduation with aÌýMaster of Construction Management, you can choose between an online and on campus option.Ìý

Many of our classes include field trips to active construction sites. These are arranged by the instructors and are highly dependent upon availability of active sites and the ability of the project’s management team to accommodate a student walk through.Ìý

Several courses in NewSchool’s Bachelor of Science in Construction Management prepare you for in-demand industry certifications.ÌýOur Construction Safety course includes an option for students to earn their OSHA-30 certification, if they successfully complete all required coursework and attend all classes (must attend a minimum of 30 hours). The Green Building class offers students the option of taking the LEED Associate exam as an alternate final exam, to earn their certification. The Delivery Systems class offers students the option of taking the CMAA Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) exam to earn their first level CMIT certification.
