San Diego, CA, June 8, 2016 鈥� For the fifth straight year, NewSchool of Architecture & Design students have collaborated with the local San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) to present the tradition of 鈥榥apkin sketching.鈥� The annual gathering will take place at NewSchool on Friday, June 10 at 6 p.m.

Students and attendees are given the opportunity to bid, through a live auction, on original concepts designed exclusively for the event by world-renowned architects. This year includes submissions from prominent architects including:

• Marvin J. Malecha, President of NewSchool of Architecture & Design. Throughout his illustrious career, Marvin has maintained an active involvement with architectural practice and has received numerous accolades and awards in the fields of architecture and design. Marvin was also elected as the first president/president elect (2008-2009) of the American Institute of Architects and served as the professional association鈥檚 National President in 2009.
• Steven Holl, Founder of internationally recognized and innovative architecture and urban design firm in New York. Steven is best known for his designs for MIT鈥檚 Simmons Hall and was named Time Magazine鈥檚 America鈥檚 Best Architect in 2001.
• Billie Tsien, Co-Founder of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects based in New York. Bilie is currently President of the Architectural League of New York and Director of the Public Art Fund.
• Wolf Prix, Co-Founder, Design Principal and CEO of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU located in Vienna, Austria. Wolf has received numerous awards including the Great Austrian State Award and the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art.
• Peter Bohlin, Founding Principal of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Peter has been a guest design critic and visiting professor at architectures schools and was awarded with the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 2010.
• Robert Venturi, Founding Principal of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. Robert, who recently celebrated his 90^th birthday, is one of the chief architectural figures of the twentieth century who used architectural history to redirect American architecture to a more exploratory design approach.

Architects and designers are creative beings who can easily find inspiration at any moment. To fully generate early realizations of awe-inspiring creations, architects frequently turn to sketching main components on a napkin. These little pieces of paper displaying ideas can eventually be turned into greater works of art. What began as a 鈥渟ketch for a sketch鈥� project, NewSchool students have turned into crafting their own napkin sketches to capture the attention of well-known architects. These creations are then mailed to architects with a request for an original sketch that can be auctioned off during the event. Proceeds for the live auction portion will benefit AIAS scholarships and programs for deserving architecture students. In years past, napkin sketches have been auctioned off for up to $5,000.

鈥淣apkin sketches have been a go-to companion for those who find spur of the moment inspiration,鈥� said NewSchool of Architecture & Design President Marvin J. Malecha. 鈥淎rchitects and designers turn to napkins to map out their initial visions with the goal of ultimately designing a lasting work of art. I鈥檓 delighted to share some of my napkin sketches for this year鈥檚 auction and to see the excitement students have in drafting their own designs and sharing with architects from around the world.鈥�

Craft and Communication are the Keys to Successful Startups

At the end of June, I had the pleasure of participating in a panel discussion during San Diego Startup Week. I joined several of my local colleagues鈥攊ncluding Sean Van Tyne, principal of the Van Tyne Group, and Paul Basile, principal and lead designer of the Basile Studio, where several of our students have interned鈥攆or a discussion of creative process.

One of the things I stressed is that innovation isn鈥檛 as much about technology and tools as it is about craft and communication. In my experience, the most careful and conscientious designers are those who care about craft. The most meaningful work often comes from people who have taken the time to understand their tools鈥攚hether they are analog or digital鈥攁nd explore the potential of those tools to do more. Innovation and creativity are also about being able to get ideas across effectively. A lot of what we do as architects, designers, or entrepreneurs is storytelling. We have a narrative throughout the creative process, and we need to be effective at helping our clients or customers understand and buy into it.

This is one of the things that helps our students stand out in firms. They are effective presenters, they manage projects in an organized way, they work collaboratively, and they represent their firms well in front of clients. Our students have these skills, because studios are at the center of our design program. They have to present their work to the class, their instructors, and guests who are often clients or industry experts.

Our graduates are also no strangers to startups. One example I shared during the panel was about four architecture students who graduated at the height of the Great Recession. They researched the broader market and found that they could design and build restaurant interiors with just a contractor鈥檚 license. Since then, they鈥檝e been very successful with top restaurants downtown and in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Like them, it is important to keep an open mind and be ready鈥攚ith honed skills in craft and communication鈥攖o move on startup opportunities that look promising.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. 鈥� OCTOBER 5, 2017 鈥� Over the past week, a group of 14 student architects from the NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool), and under the direction of Professor Chuck Crawford, collaborated to build a sukkah鈥攁 temporary dwelling to commemorate Sukkot, the seven-day Jewish harvest festival. The structure now sits on the Jewish Family Service (JFS) of San Diego鈥檚 Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus.

The Sukkot holiday began at sunset on October 4, 2017 and ends Wednesday, October 11 at sundown. There are several additional activities taking place at the sukkah, on JFS campus, including 鈥淪oup in The Sukkah鈥� and senior programs.

With three walls and an open door, the sukkah represents inclusivity, hospitality, and the temporary nature of life. For the project, NewSchool students conformed to specifications that respect Jewish traditions while also integrating design approaches that reflect 狈别飞厂肠丑辞辞濒鈥檚 own emphasis on sustainability.

鈥淭he Sukkah Project is a unique one that I look forward to every year,鈥� said Chuck Crawford, associate professor of graduate architecture at NewSchool. 鈥淭his project reflects and aligns with our school values. The community involvement, cultural learning and team building is crucial to their real world education and future careers.鈥�

JFS Chief Executive Officer Michael Hopkins thanked the NewSchool students noting, 鈥淚 think they did an amazing job capturing a number of essential aspects: the value of the sukkah and the value of ritual, and the rules for building it.鈥� Hopkins also complimented the acrylic colors 鈥渢hat represent the diversity of your class and the diversity of the community as well.鈥�

NewSchool is proud to announce that Kenneth Frampton, one of the world鈥檚 most respected authorities on modern architecture, will be the featured speaker at this year鈥檚 Fall Convocation.

Frampton is a British architect, critic, author, and historian. He is especially well known for his writing on twentieth century architecture and for his contribution to the development of architectural phenomenology. His books include Modern Architecture: A Critical History, Studies in Tectonic Culture, and books on Le Corbusier and Kengo Kuma.

鈥淜enneth Frampton is known as an authoritative, subtle, and insightful critic of architecture,鈥� said Marvin J. Malecha, president and chief academic officer of NewSchool. 鈥淭hroughout his career he has promoted new ideas to evaluate, interrogate, and understand architecture that have advanced the entire field.鈥�

Frampton is currently the Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia University. He has also taught at Princeton University, the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, and is a former fellow of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York whose members also included architects Peter Eisenman, Manfredo Tafuri, and Rem Koolhaas.

The Fall Convocation marks the start of the academic year and builds on a tradition that NewSchool revived last year. A convocation, or academic assembly, has its roots in the rich tradition of reflection and lively discourse that characterize the most respected universities. It provides an opportunity for the NewSchool community to recognize the accomplishments of students and alumni, to consider what the upcoming academic year offers, and to reflect upon the words of distinguished visiting speakers such as Frampton.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. 鈥� SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 鈥� NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) is pleased to host a discussion this week about the future growth of San Diego.

The event, which is co-presented by the San Diego chapter of the California Planning Association and will be held at NewSchool, will address the issues San Diego faces as it grows, matures, and urbanizes. The city is expected to add 1 million more people by 2050 and housing鈥攁ffordable and otherwise鈥攊s projected to be among the biggest challenges.

A hand-selected, uniquely-qualified panel of experts鈥擶endy L. Tinsley Becker, AICP, RPH; Frank Wolden, Principal, AVRP Skyport Studios; and Diego Velasco, AICP, LEED AP鈥攚ill lead a discussion about design in the modern history of San Diego, the role it should play as San Diego confronts increased density in the future, and how it can address projected housing shortages.

NewSchool announced that a group of its students, under the direction of professor Chuck Crawford, are designing and building a sukkah – a temporary dwelling to commemorate Sukkot, the seven-day Jewish harvest festival held in October. Student architects will build the sukkah on Friday, Sept. 29, starting at 10:30 a.m., at the Jewish Family Service of San Diego鈥檚 Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus, located at 8788 Balboa Avenue, San Diego, CA 92123.

Classes are currently out of session and the students are volunteering their time during break to complete the project. The nonprofit approached NewSchool about building a sukkah that could be re-constructed on an annual basis and enjoyed by JFS鈥檚 wide variety of clientele, including low-income families and individuals, seniors, immigrants and refugees, teen volunteer leaders, and many more.

NewSchool is excited to team up with the Women In Architecture Palomar Chapter (WIA|P) and the Women In Architecture San Diego Chapter (WIA|SD) to host the two-part . Part 1 of the is open to the public and will be held this Saturday, August 19 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. on the NewSchool campus, located at 1249 F Street in downtown San Diego.

Women in Architecture have chosen the topic of 鈥淗ealthy Urbanism鈥� for this two part series. The WIA|P Summer Film Fest and WIA TALKs discussion will explore what makes a 鈥渉ealthy鈥� urban environment with the intent of contributing to San Diego鈥檚 citywide discussion around the State directive for San Diego, 鈥淏uilding for the Next 1 Million.鈥�

Part I of the film festival kicks off with a pre-film reception. Attendees will then view two films, 鈥淭he Human Scale鈥� and 鈥淯rbanized, which both showcase actual examples from cities around the world and their successes and failures in designing 鈥渉ealthy鈥� urban environments. The evening will also feature a discussion, moderated by 狈别飞厂肠丑辞辞濒鈥檚 professor of architecture, Mike Stepner. The event will conclude with a post-film social with light refreshments.

On October 21, Part II of the film festival, WIA|P 2017 WIA TALKS, will take place as part of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Diego and Palomar Chapters鈥� annual ArchtoberFest. Archtoberfest presents a series of lectures, films, tours and other activities, aimed to increase awareness of the profession of architecture and design, as well as, the value of the professional(s) who work to create a well designed built environments on behalf of their clients.

NewSchool is excited to welcome world-renowned architects and visionary leaders as guest lecturers at its new, innovative Neuroscience for Architecture Summer Intersession Program. This special four-day executive course, which kicks off today and runs through August 17, 2017, provides American Institute of Architects (AIA) continuing education credits for attendees, but more importantly, examines the juncture of brain and the built environment.

Leaders in the field of neuroscience for architecture will discuss their work as it relates to building bridges between these two fields. Special guest lectures and panel discussions will be held, featuring renowned architect Steven Holl, FAIA and noted Finnish architect/author/critic Juhani Pallasmaa, Hon. FAIA. Joining them will be NewSchool neuroscience faculty members Gil Cooke, FAIA and Tatiana Berger, Assoc. AIA, along with guests Gordon Chong, Ph.D., FAIA and Alison Whitelaw, FAIA. Prominent neuroscientists featured in the program include Fred Gage, Ph.D., Thomas Albright, Ph.D., and Sergei Gepshtein, Ph.D. of the Salk Institute, and Eduardo Macagno, Ph.D., Founding Dean of the School of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego.

Special Guest Lectures:

Juhani Pallasmaa is a Finnish architect, professor of architecture, and dean at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. Pallasmaa鈥檚 approach to architecture and design is rooted in phenomenology, in which he allows the environment to inform his designs. As a leading international figure in contemporary architecture, design, and art culture, he has written and lectured extensively throughout the world on architecture and the visual arts, environmental psychology, and cultural philosophy for more than 40 years.

Steven Holl, who leads an internationally renowned architecture and urban design office with locations in New York City and Beijing, is an American artist and award-winning architect. He is known for his organic design approach in which the site itself generates an 鈥渁rchitectural idea,鈥� which he then applies. Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each site to create a concept-driven design. He was one of the keynote speakers at last fall鈥檚 Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture conference. Salk Institute. With a background in neurobiology, psychology, and vision science, he brings a unique perspective on how visual systems organize information and shape our perception.

Sergei Gepshtein is the founding director of the Collaboratory for Adaptive Sensory Technologies at the The Neuroscience for Architecture Summer Intersession Program will include studio work along with other guest lecturers and studio time. This unique course also features noted neuroscientists describing current research and discussing its implications for design. This course is intended for licensed architects, urban designers, planners, design professionals, healthcare industry professionals, doctoral candidates, and post-graduate students in architecture and related fields.

The discussion on the future of San Diego鈥檚 Mission Valley and the Qualcomm Stadium site can be polarizing, however, NewSchool of Architecture & Design faculty and students are providing creative and intuitive solutions, and those ideas are getting the attention of the local community, developers and City officials.

狈别飞厂肠丑辞辞濒鈥檚 City Planning graduate class, under the direction of Adjunct Professor Brian F Mooney FAICP, has been working with the City of San Diego to prepare conceptual plans for the revitalization of Kearny Mesa. The students,including Noura Bishay, Marcella Italiano, Will Kockler, Madhavi Natarajan, Sovanarry Phy, Veena Ravi, Chandana Savadatti and Waseem Toonsia, have been working on key areas of the community plan associated with the creation of an Asian Entertainment and Dinning District on Convoy Street and revitalization of the regions commercial, office and light industrial areas.

The workshop included tackling issues such as planning and design constraints to greater community and the students鈥� work as urban planning interventions. Their presentations at the community workshop included:

• The students鈥� concepts and their graphic presentations were lauded by both community representative and City staff. The students will continue to work with the city and their urban interventions will be highlighted on the city鈥檚 website.
• Rethinking South Convoy Street, particularly the Target and Costco site into an Urban Village
• Adding significant residential areas in association with intervening park space, and a distinct architectural statement and traffic calming opportunity
• Linking North and South Claremont Mesa Boulevard at Convoy Street
• Rethinking urban forms on Aero Drive
• Adding affordable housing and creating a complete street and housing opportunities in mixed use concepts along Claremont Mesa Boulevard East of Highway 163.
